The historic city of York is one of Britain's most beautiful, and its appeal is heightened by a history of turbulence, drama, upheaval and grandeur. Originally a prominent Roman settlement, it was later a Viking stronghold and a key location during the Wars of the Roses, and went on to become an ecclesiastical capital and, by the time of this map, the heart of the Victorian railway network in the North.
