A number of specialists in German studies have joined forces in this book to paint a comprehensive picture of Germany since unification.

Starting from the 1989 revolution, the book reviews the fall of East Germany, including a chapter on how the event was experienced by observers and participants.Individual chapters analyze the new political structures, Germany's role as a European power, and the social, educational and economic problems generated by the western take-over of the former GDR.

A separate section is devoted to culture and the arts, with studies of the language, the media, cinema, theatre, literature and feminism.
