Recent advances related to the effects of transferrin, ferritin and iron in the central and peripheral nervous system in various experimental situations are focused in the present publication. It shows the effect of iron and the proteins involved in its transport and storage upon development and neurodegeneration and describes the distribution of transferrin and ferritin receptors in the different areas and cells of the CNS.

The mechanisms of iron transport through the blood-brain barrier and new iron transport proteins are reported.

Topics such as regulation of tissue-specific expression of the transferrin gene and iron-mediated protein oxidation and proteasomal degradation are covered as well. This special issue is indispensable reading for all neuroscientists, biologists, and physicians who are interested in how the various cell populations in the brain respond to iron and in the effects of transferrin and ferritin evaluated through models of overexpression and/or absence of their respective genes.
