Find out how it all works below:

Read a book

After first identifying a child’s reading age and range using the computer-adaptive STAR Reading™ test (access to which is included with every AR licence), the first step is to encourage them to read a suitably-challenging book. We work with over 300 publishers and imprints to ensure a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction titles are available to read and quiz with AR.

When administered throughout the year, the results of an interim STAR test can track progress and identify whether or not a child is meeting age-related expectations.

Take a quiz

Over 80,000 books from the Classics to the latest authors have been quizzed for AR and after reading one, the next step is for the child to take the accompanying quiz using a computer or the app for Apple iOS® devices. Quizzed titles can be found using the free online search tool at AR BookFinder at: www.arbookfind.co.uk.

Accelerated Reader offers multiple-choice Reading Practice, Vocabulary Practice and Literacy Skills quizzes. Approximately 200 new quizzes are added to the programme every month, with many recommendations coming directly from schools using our online Quiz Suggestion Form at: www.renlearn.co.uk/quiz-suggestions.

Get instant feedback

At the end of the quiz the child can rate the book by awarding it 1-4 stars before receiving immediate feedback on how well they’ve done in the form of a TOPS report – a copy of which is also automatically available to their teacher.

This ‘Opportunity to Praise’ also contains information such as the number of words the child has read and the points they have earned for passing the quiz – all of which can be used to recognise reading achievement through ‘100%’ and ‘Millionaire Clubs’.

The Reading Dashboard combines data from both STAR Reading and AR to provide a detailed picture of how well individual and groups of children are performing.
