On-site generation is a growth sector, offering important economic and environmental benefits.

The installed capacity is expected to double over the next decade.

This comprehensive guide focuses on: combined heat and power (CHP)/co-generation; district heating; waste-to-energy; and peak-lopping.

The guide has three main sections. The first part (over 100 pages) reviews the sector from the viewpoint of those operating, evaluating or specifying on-site power.

It examines the present status and future prospects for the various technologies, from small-scale packaged plant to the largest industrial systems, utlizing reciprocating engines, gas and steam turbines, combined cycle plant and fuel cells.

Guidance is given on: electrical principles associated with on-site generation; integration into existing systems; legislation affecting this sector; finance and acquisition options; sources of support and project evaluation strategies.

It includes an assessment of the present installed capacity by sector, type and rating, together with a review of the experience, attitudes and satisfaction levels of a large number of on-site plant operators. The second part (over 200 pages) provides detailed information on companies providing the products, services and expertise which are essential to the success of on-site power projects.

It includes selection charts, company profiles and contact details in sections allocated to: power plant; principal components; contract energy management; consultancy and other services; energy and fuel supply; and professional bodies.

The third part is a product reference section containing: selection charts; details of equipment suppliers' custom-design activities; and a model-by-model listing of more than 300 packaged CHP sets and standard designs from suppliers in many countries, with salient performance data.

This is arranged in sequence by electrical rating, covering plant from 15kW to 50MW.

This is an update of ERA report 95-0001 "A Guide to CHP and On-Site Generation".
