A collection of Shetland Island texts from the medieval and early modern period.

The book commences in the Middle Ages, when Shetland was administered directly from Norway, and ends during years when Shetlanders were coming to terms with new rulers from Scotland.

The volume contains 266 documents from record offices in Scandinavia, Germany and Britain.

The documents concern the administrative and economic affairs of Shetland and the private transactions of numerous Shetlanders during several centuries.

The climax of the book is a new edition of the lengthy complaint by 700 islanders against their governor Laurence Bruce in February 1577.
