The authors of this volume argue that academic achievement is influenced not only by circumstances found in the individual or family or school settings, but by a whole host of factors, such as social and economic environments, the development of the self-concept, peer pressure, personal attributes such as resources, skills and motivation.

The contributors come from a variety of academic disciplines and they cover the full educational cycle from early childhood to tertiary education.
