Launched in 1999, Afterall is a journal of contemporary art that offers in-depth analysis of artists' work, along with essays that broaden the context in which to understand it.

Its academic format differentiates it from popular review magazines.

Afterall 44 focuses on indigenous contemporary art practices around the world.

It explores the possibilities and potentialities of reinventing contexts and of speaking from within. An essay examines the Green Horse Society, an arts collective in Mongolia that has transformed its contemporary arts scene, and featured artists include Maria Thereza Alves, Pia Arke, and Hans Ragnar Mathisen.

The issue is visually rich, with numerous accompanying illustrations.
