The Fishkill Supply Depot : Sacred Ground of the American Revolution

See all formats and editions

The Fishkill Supply Depot was the most important military installation in the American Revolution created by General George Washington soon after he took command of the American forces. The Depot supplied all the American operations in the Hudson Valley and without it there would be no Saratoga victory and turning point in the war. It also prevented the British from capturing the Hudson Valley in order to divide the colonies away from the revolutionary hotbed of New England and Boston in particular. The Depot operated for most of the war and the winters here were far colder than Valley Forge and Morristown and the suffering far greater. Yet it is relatively unknown today with only a few remnants remaining centered around the Van Wyck homestead which was General Putnam's headquarters and still stands today and is open to the public. George Washington and other notable figures all visited the troops at the Depot.
