Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) was a leading figure of the Abstract Expressionist movement that dominated US art in the late 1940s and 1950s.

This video, directed by Kim Evans, surveys the whole of Pollock's career, using footage of the artist at work and commentary by his friends and associates.

Pollock is shown practising his method of Action painting, in which he applied paint with sticks and syringes to a canvas flat on the ground.

This apparently haphazard method - which Pollock related to Oriental ink painting - were simultaneously vilified by the popular press and acclaimed by critics.
