Anthony Montague Browne was a young official in the Foreign Office when in 1952 he was seconded to become Private Secretary to Sir Winston Churchill, who in 1951 had returned to Downing Street for his second term as Prime Minister.

Apart from a brief return to the Foreign Office after The Prime Minsters's retirement in 1955, Montague Browne remained with Churchill - as adviser, amanuensis and companion - until Churchill's death in January 1965.As the final member of the private staff to have written his memoirs, Montague Browne adds new information about Churchill's activities and attitudes when out of power, most significantly during the Suez Crisis in 1956.Alonside its account of the final phase of Churchill's life, the book describes Britain's decline in the post-war decades.
