Originally published in 1930, this two-volume work collates in compendium form a body of record, allusion, criticism, hypothesis and research concerned with the Shakespearean text and tradition.

Volume 1 examines Shakespeare's origins and the Elizabethan stage in the context of his plays, and contains a comprehensive evaluation of bibliographical and historical material in relation to the canon of Shakespeare's plays and sonnets.

Volume 2 includes biographical information gathered from historical records and tradition, which the author submits to analysis.

Shakespearean scholar E.K.Chambers was also the author of "The Medieval Stage" and "The Elizabethan Stage".
