The greater Canterbury region is much loved by overseas visitors and New Zealanders alike.

Its urban heart is the vibrant city of Christchurch, which belies its southern presence with strongly English architecture and parks.

Forming a dramatic backdrop to Christchurch, the Southern Alps offer many opportunities for skiing, walking and mountaineering, and overlook the sweep of the Canterbury Plains, where traditional livestock and cropping farms are fast being joined by vineyards and olive groves. And to the south is the austere beauty of the Mackenzie Country, with its intensely blue glacial lakes and the arching peaks of Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park.
