This work subjects to detailed critical analysis the seven German translations of Anton Chekhov's Three Sisters.< Translations of representative segments of the Russian text are discussed in detail and assessed comparatively, using a quantitative technique, which is an innovative aspect of this study.

The criteria used in the assessment of relevant aspects of translation practice are developed on the basis of contemporary translation theory.

Conclusions reached report on the current state of progress towards the achievement of a definitive German version of Chekhov's Three Sisters.
