The series revolves around two university physicists, Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Sheldon (Jim Parsons), their beautiful, free-spirited neighbour, Penny (Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting), and their friends, Howard (Simon Helberg) and Rajesh (Kunal Nayyar).

In this season, Sheldon returns from a trip after his possessions are stolen but must make amends with girlfriend Amy (Mayim Bialik), having left without informing her; Penny gets a job at the pharmaceutical company Howard's wife Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) works for; and Penny and Leonard adjust to life as an engaged couple.
