The Inscriptions of Early Medieval Brittany

See all formats and editions

This corpus of inscribed stones from Brittany dating from AD 400-1100 is the product of the interdisciplinary Celtic Inscribed Stones Project of University College London.

Lengthy descriptions of twenty-nine inscribed stones, from Finistere, Cotes-d'Armor, Morbihan, Ille-et-Vilaine and the Channel Islands, pay particular attention to the locations of the stones, their environmental, social and religious contexts and their spatial distribution.

The inscriptions themselves are illustrated and reconstructed and their textual content analysed while the introductory commentary places the monuments within their wider context.

Includes an appendix of excluded monuments and indices of words, personal names and inscriptions.

The text throughout is presented in parallel English and French.
