Dewpoint Corrosion

This report is a reprint first published in 1985 by the Institute of Corrosion Science and Technology.

It deals with the subject of dewpoint corrosion at the professional engineering level.

It contains a series of reviews which examine the progress made in combating dewpoint corrosion in both large and small coal- and oil-fired plant.

The related fields of dewpoint corrosion in fully condensing domestic and district heating systems, in gas turbine and vehicle exhaust systems, and in flue gas desulphurization systems are also examined.

The mechanisms and rate determining step in dewpoint corrosion are explained, and the selection and development of alloys and coatings with significantly lower corrosion rates in operating plants are described.

The information provided should help in achieving economies in resources, including increases in heat recovery and combustion efficiency and reduction in materials replacement and maintenance costs.

Attention is also paid to the problems encountered with the use of lower-grade fuels, the search for higher efficiency and the stringent controls on pollutant emission.
