Strategic Management of Health Care Organizations, Third Edition is a comprehensive and concise text on strategic management as it applies to a variety of health care organizations including physicians' offices, hospitals, long term care facilities, health departments, and others. The central theme of the text is that business-oriented strategic management can improve the success of health care organizations in a turbulent environment.

Current health care examples are integrated throughout the 12 chapters of text material, organized around a model of strategic management. Step-by-step, students are presented with the theory of strategic management and a process to carry out strategic management. Additionally, six to ten actual current situations are presented in each chapter as perspectives.

New to the Third Edition: Chapters 1 and 2 have been combined to present the model of strategic management earlier, strategic change was moved from old Chapter 2 to Chapter 6 to better connect the strategy evaluation process with strategic change. A new chapter 3, Competitor Analysis has been adder. Chapter 4 has been rewritten to provide a process to assess internal resources, capabilities, and competencies.

Following the fourteen chapters, there are eighteen cases for students to analyze by applying the theory as presented in the text to current health care situations. To further aid the student, five appendices (how to analyze a case, financial analysis for heath care, making an oral presentation, secondary data sources, and a comprehensive bibliography) are included.

The Instructor's Manual includes chapter lecture notes, answers to end of the chapter questions, transparency masters for various text and case exhibits, and comprehensive Teaching Notes for each of the cases.
