The S&C is fast approaching its 150th anniversary, a remarkable milestone considering its threat of closure a few decades ago.

For the last two decades, the author has lived both in Cumbria and North Yorkshire, near to both the northern and southern extremities of the line, consequently enjoying the privilege of becoming intimate with the geography and character of all sections of the route, covering it photographically in all seasons, in the changing climates and moods.
