Twelve architectural critics have written on their own specialist areas, to offer knowledgeable accounts of the various schools of architecture that have influenced the area.

Among other subjects, the writings cover the influence of Sir Herbert Baker, attitides towards the housing of black labour, the work of Helmut Stauch, and the technological and idealistic influences on modern architecture.
