Therapists working with men often need to focus on connecting with the client before deeper therapeutic work can begin.

In the case of African American male clients, these reservations about therapy may be also affected by the client's racial identity, particularly if the therapist is from another racial background. In this video, Franklin first engages with a male client, developing a personal connection by using a more conversational style, before they turn to the client's struggle with issues of racial identity in different social contexts.
