These papers cover the results of a programme of collaboration between Russian and West European researchers on the archaeology of the medieval Russian city of Novgorod, a Hanseatic trading post famous for the preservation of organic and inorganic materials, including streets and buildings.

Among the organic artefacts are exmples of birch-bark letters, which indicate widespread literacy amongst the secular inhabitants of the city.

The papers cover all aspects of recent research into buildings, properties, artefacts and paleo-environmental remains.
