Many consider it to be her single greatest work, and, like most of Gilman's writing, it focused on a few major themes: the transformation of marriage, family, and home, with her central point being the "economic freedom and specialisation of women as necessary to the improvement of marriage, motherhood, domestic industry, and racial improvement."
