This report gives details of improvements and developments to the judicial appointments processes.

It also outlines significant progress made on the recruitment of magistrates.

Improving diversity in the judiciary is the third section of the report, covering encouraging applications and raising awareness, and removing barriers to appointment.

Under the Constitutional Reform Act 2005, there will be wide changes in the role and responsibilities of the Lord Chancellor.

These include the creation of the independent Judicial Appointments Commission in April 2006, which will assume responsibility for judicial appointments and appointments to the new Tribunals Service.
