Teacher Supply : The Work of Part-time and Returning Teachers

This report is based on a series of surveys conducted by FMI to assess the quality of part-time and returning teachers and to identify factors affecting their recruitment, training and employment and their effectiveness in the classroom.

The report concludes that overall, the quality of work of the majority of teachers in the total sample was significantly above the national average.

Part-time teachers and full-time returners made a valuable and increasingly substantial contribution to the teaching force.

These teachers offered schools not only the ability to respond efficiently and effectively to fluctuating demands, but also the possibility of strengthening specialist expertise across the primary and secondary curriculum.
