The Training of Primary School Teachers : March 1991-March 1992

Between March 1991 and March 1992, HMI inspected 15 primary initial teacher training (ITT) courses in eight institutions.

In most of these all aspects of undergraduate and Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) courses were inspected.

Most of the institutions were situated in urban areas and all aimed to train teachers for such areas.

Inspectors found that the work of students teaching in schools was generally at least satisfactory - but the students' school-based work was rarely linked directly to the institution-based parts of their courses.
