This is a history of the Reformation across Europe and the British Isles from 1500 to 1618.

It is a guide to the complexities of meaning and interpretation of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation - and the religious, intellectual and political changes that followed as a result. The volume includes: a guide to the reformation church, including a listing of major feast days; two sections in the careers and writings of Luther and Calvin; detailed chronologies of the progress of reformation in Germany, Scandinavia and the Swiss Cantons; a country-by-country account of reactions to the Protestant Reformationincluding France (and the French Wars of Religion), the Netherlands (and the Dutch Revolt), the Spanish Peninsula, and Poland-Lithuania; and a section on the Counter-Reformation including the Jesuits, the new Catholic foundations, and the Council of Trent.
