This book introduces the word 'jumps' and, although it may look difficult from a phonic point of view, the illustrations make its meaning very clear.

Similarly, the illustrations of the duck make 'quack, quack' very clear.

One of the main teaching points of this book is the consonant combination 'ck' used at the end of some English words.

It is always preceded by a short vowel, e.g. 'sack, neck, tick, rock, luck'. The other teaching point is the use of the word 'is'.

The grapheme 's' is not used in its usual phoneme/grapheme correspondence, as in the word 'sun'.

Hence, it should be taught as a special word to learn by sight. The complications of phonics should be ignored at this stage.
