The year 1912 was a crucial one in the artistic life of Thomas Hardy.

His first wife's death, Emma Lavinia, after a marriage of love, but long languished in incomprehension, boredom and mutual dislike, generated poetical flowers in the garden of the Victorian writer, elegies of dark and sublime beauty, songs woven with nostalgic reminiscences and gloomy meditations on life.

These late poems were published in Satires of Circumstance (1914), Moments of Vision (1917), Late Lyrics and earlier (1922), Human Shows (1925) e Winter Words (1928).
