This manual was developed by the Western Pacific Region of the WHO as a guide to training young scientists in conducting health science research.

It uses real life examples to illustrate principles and methods and make the manual more relevant.

In addition to the basic information on research methodology it focuses on the issues of importance before a study is proposed, to help researchers with planning and grant applications.

It will also be useful when writing a thesis. This second edition has been revised to include more information on statistical methodologies and to clarify points raised in workshops.
