The dangerous condition known as chronic kidney disease (CKD) can harm the kidneys. There is a problem with the kidneys' aging process. Kidney failure can result from CKD. There are various forms of CKD. The most frequent type is the chronic renal failure (CRF), which occurs when the body's needs are not being met by the kidneys. When the kidneys stop functioning or when the blood flow to the kidneys is compromised, CRF can occur. It is possible to stop CKD from occurring. If CKD does occur, it can also be treated. The type of CKD a person has, as well as their age, general health, and other medical issues; all affect how they are treated. CKD has no known treatment. Treatment is based on the specific requirements of the patient. However, there are steps you may take to help lower your chance of developing CKD and maintain healthy kidney function. A national nonprofit organization called the National Renal Foundation (NKF) seeks to raise the quality of life for people with kidney disease. The NKF offers tools and information to CKD patients as well as to their families. The NKF also supports studies into new therapies and approaches to raising the standard of living for those with CKD. There are several resources available from the NKF to help you learn more about CKD and how to manage it. Visit www.kidney.org to learn more about the NKF and its resources.
