European security and defence

As the century draws to a close, this report argues that there is a need to maintain close transatlantic security ties and to expand these to include the security interests of Eastern Europe, including Russia, in a stable and co-operative European security system.

It concludes that there are grounds for optimism. Despite evident introspection in the West, and economic and social disruption in Eastern Europe, a strong spirit of co-operation is being nurtured, which is increasingly evident in the areas of trade, arms control and co-operation on regional crises.
