The Defence of Greece

This is a military history of the two Persian invasions of Greece, the first of which came to grief at Marathon, the second at Salamis and Plataia.

The conflicts are largely examined in terms of the fifth century BC, avioding modern conceptions, and from the Persian as well as the Greek point of view.

The author believes Herodotus should remain central to any attempt to explain the conflicts, and reassesses his skill and insight as a military historian.
