The political landscape in Europe has dramatically changed over the past two decades or so, thanks to international instability, in which Europe has been deeply involved, directly and indirectly. The rise of fundamental Islam in different parts of the world and the conflicts and instability in the Middle East have contributed immensely to shaping the external and internal policies in Europe. The European Union, as a major player in world politics, had to take a leading stance to provide support to those who needed it worldwide. But has this compromised the European project of unity?
