Johan Marais was also a witness to and participant in several incidences of police corruption and brutality.

He developed a serious drinking problem and suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, but it took a suicide attempt before he would admit that he had a problem.

He consulted a doctor who recommended that he should write down his incredible life story.
