The Bundeswehr's missions abroad have not only changed the armed forces, but also the political discourse on this issue.

As early as the 1990s, the struggle for German participation in the war accompanied the Bundeswehr on its way from the 'army of unity' to the 'army in action'.

Since then, over 380,000 soldiers have served abroad.
