In this volume, Charley has discovered that his brother-in-law, Oiley, was hiding a deserter from the French Foreign Legion called 'Blue'.

Charley agreed to hear his story before deciding if he'd help him, too.

Blue told him that during the Battle of Verdun he came upon a group of legionnaires about to be executed.
