Joe Gould's secret

Joe Gould was a member of one of the oldest families in Massachusetts and a graduate of Harvard.

Instead of becoming a surgeon and civic leader, he moved to New York City, and spent the next 40 years living on the streets of Greenwich Village as a kind of outcast Bohemian hero.
