The Japanese Association for Animal Cell Technology (JAACT) was established in 1989.

JAACT focuses primarily on two objectives, the production of large quantities of supra-natural bioactive proteins by engineered mammalian cells and the maintenance of in vitro cellular functions which have been expressed in vivo to discover physiologically active substances produced by the cells and use of the cells.

These objectives seem to contradict each other. However, both can be accomplished if some means can be found to regulate the expression of cellular functions.

The contributed papers in this volume have been classified by subject - high density culture, serum-free medium and physiology, new cell lines as expression vehicles, design for culture systems, specific products and their characterization, cell culture systems, genetic and physiological enhancement of productivity, in vitro systems for toxicology, pharmacology and carcinogenesis testing.
