The transport of goods by train remained an important part of railway operation well into the 1960s.

As such, railway-owned and -operated road vehicles were a familiar sight, though the individual and distinctive company colors were replaced by a standard crimson and cream livery similar to those previously carried by passenger rolling stock.

However, with the exception of GWR, scant attention has been paid to this area of railway infrastructure due to lack of material on the subject.

Unprecedented access to a previously unpublished collection of SR views and vistas has made it possible for accomplished authors Bruce Murray and Kevin Robertson to delight railway enthusiasts with rare scenes showing both rigid and articulated vehicles, including the famous Scammels.

These illustrations are beautifully complimented by firsthand accounts from Fred Emery, a former Southern Region Road vehicle inspector, whose entertaining anecdotes bring this story of life.

A must-have read for all keen SR enthusiasts!
