This volume is a collection of Lawrence Durrell's prose writings from his earliest years until shortly before his death. It is illustrated with photographs, cartoons by Lawrence and Nancy Durrell, manuscript notes by Durrell, and memorabilia. This first volume is divided into five sections: "Durrell on Durrell", comprising autobiographical writings; "The Artist's Eye", detailing Durrell's interest in the visual arts; "Fictions"; "Durrell at War", made up of his letters and essays relating to World War Two; and "Spirit of Place", a collection of his essays and prefaces. A special feature of this unique collection is the range of previously unpublished or inaccessible material authored by Durrell.
