He reported a corpse he'd found on the trail and he ran afoul of Curly Bill Graham and his yes-man Marshal Ben Brush.

The corpse was one of Curly Bill's gunmen and Whit had no alibi.

After Bush threw him in jail, Whit knew he was in bad trouble.

Bush gave Whit one chance to make his break for life, but there was a hitch - the only escape route was a dead-end alley lined with Bush's sharpshooters.
