"In a Lonely Place" is a film noir directed by Nicholas Ray, and starring Ray's then wife, Gloria Grahame, and Humphrey Bogart as a jaundiced Hollywood scriptwriter. Dana Polan explores the film's production history, its relation to Dorothy Hughes' original novel and the noir tradition, and examines its strange relation to the film-making world in which it is set.
