Robert Cope Harland ended his career as a British spy in an Austrian hospital, after being tortured and beaten during the Velvet Revolution in Prague.

He found a new life working with the Red Cross and then the UN.

Twelve years later, Harland's plane, carrying a number of UN officials, crashes in mysterious circumstances on its approach to La Guardia airport, New York.
