John Peter Zenger and the Fundamental Freedom

Material published in John Peter Zenger's New-York Journal so incensed royal governor Sir William Cosby that Zenger was arrested for seditious libel (but eventually found not guilty).

The case became a landmark, establishing that truth was the ultimate defense against charges of slander or libel.
