Following an extensive introduction by Philip Rance, which surveys the historical development of ancient Greek military writing and the evolution of modern scholarship on this literary tradition, this book presents 15 papers given at a conference devoted to Greek taktika, a broad genre of handbooks concerning tactics, generalship and the conduct of war.

Collectively the contributors address the practical utility of these texts in ancient warfare, their literary, military and cultural contexts in Antiquity, and their diverse uses as historical sources within the wider sphere of ancient military history.

The final three papers selectively examine the reception of ancient Greek tactical writing in Byzantium and the Early Modern period in Western and Eastern Europe.
