Rural Transformation in Tropical Africa

By drawing upon a wide range of disciplines, this book presents a comprehensive review of the main problems and pressures affecting rural Africa as it comes to terms with modernization.

Social, political, economic, agricultural and health issues are examined by the contributors. Of all the principal populated regions of the world, tropical Africa is the least urbanized, so to address the subject of rural transformation is to study change in the lives of most of its people, and a broad picture of events, continent-wide, is built up in this work. Earlier versions of the contributions were first presented at a conference on rural transformation in tropical Africa held at the University of Birmingham on 23-24 September 1986.
