This volume examines the role of Gianni Celati in shaping Italian fiction and culture, since the 1960s, as a leading narrator, writer, scholar, translator and filmmaker.

This volume stems from a conference organized at the University of Leicester in May 2007 to celebrate Celati's long-standing and multi-faceted career on the occasion of his 70th birthday, and also his close collaboration with writers and translators such as Daniele Benati, Ermanno Cavazzoni, Enrico De Vivo and Jean Talon - all guests at the conference for the first time in the UK, together with the main Celati scholars.

Whilst exploring various aspects of these writers' work, the volume investigates the notion put forward by Celati of literature as 'fantasticazione', or reverie, in the sense of a collective work of the mind that stems from a shared imagination within a community of like-minded people.

Reflecting the atmosphere of 'symposium' of the conference, this volume includes both the writers' contributions, their round tables on the questions of literature and of translation, and the critical analyses of many leading Celati scholars on different aspects of his work and of that of his colleagues.
