Uppark was a beautiful late 17th century house containing works of art collected on the Grand Tour.

Its splendour was destroyed in August 1989 when the house caught fire and within hours was reduced to a gutted ruin.

The National Trust faced the decision of what to do with the house and its contents, a high proportion of which had been rescued while the fire was fought.

After great debate the house was saved and its contents repaired in an unprecedented five year programme of restoration.

This book rells the story of the decision to restore the property and of the craftsmen and women brought together to return the house to its former splendour.
