1896 Student's English Dictionary : 19th Century Thorough Lexicon of English words

The STUDENT'S ENGLISH DICTIONARY - GREATLY AUGMENTED - ILLUSTRATED BY NEARLY EIGHT HUNDRED ENGRAVINGS ON WOOD, may be described as a general dictionary of the English language, literary, scientific, and technical, etymological, and pronouncing, occupying an intermediate position, forming a handy work of reference for all classes of readers. While its vocabulary embraces all words likely to be met by the ordinary inquirer, the different meanings are given with some fullness, and care has also been taken to express them with adequate clearness and precision.

The etymologies - which from their number and completeness may be said to give a distinct character to the STUDENT'S DICTIONARY - have been entirely recast, so as to bring them abreast of the knowledge which recent investigations have accumulated regarding etymology of English and the allied tongues.

The woodcut illustrations have much more than doubled in number, thus adding to the attractiveness, as well as the value of the work. Altogether, the STUDENT'S DICTIONARY, in the improved and enlarged form in which it now appears, may claim to be second to no work or reference of similar scope. - C. ANNANDALE - February 1895.
